One good aspect of the media is that they
report predominantly bad news, following the
principle that good news are no news and do
not sell. They are thus warning the people
of what is wrong, creating a hope or urgency
that it will be corrected. That thought came
to me when I saw the big headline on the
magazine US World Report, "Ice Cover in the
Antarctic, The Effect of the Global
Warming". It reminded me that I convened
the first UN world conference on climatic
changes in 1979 which was totally ignored.
It is only now in 2000, 21 years later, that
this problem was officially recognized by
governments.
