I sometimes take out one of my old journals or Markings from past years to see what I thought at that time. During the night I came across the following Marking in 1983, fifteen years ago: "In a hundred years, capitalism and communism will be past history." Well, it did not take 100 years for communism to disappear, and I wonder if it will take as much for capitalism. I think it will be much sooner. The collapse of the South Korean stock market last December was the first sign, but the US stopped it immediately with a donation of 10 billion dollars infinitely quicker than paying its past dues to the United Nations. Within days no one spoke about it anymore. But there will be other crises which will put an end to this second obsolete ideology of the 19th century or force it to change. If in this immense mass of people one human being, held erect by the will to live, suddenly lets go, do you think that he will survive? No. The will to stay erect, the will to live and to be fully oneself is the single, most important force available to us.

Farrell teaches Consumer and Family Science, a subject that used to be
called Home Economics. Talking with Farrell, it's as if a window opens
into the hidden worlds that exist in between the requirements of
standard curricula, and to how important these hidden realms really
are. These insights come out in her stories, "One time I had a child
from Afghanistan whose parents were killed. He came to America and
lived with his extended family. I found a student for him to talk with,
too. I'd bring him to my computer and we would look up holy spots,
mosques. He showed me all these beautiful places in his country and
we'd just talk. And I had another child who came from Mongolia. We
would talk about Mongolia and what it was like. He came from a very
prominent Tibetan Buddhist family. In the summer he lived in the old
way- in yurts in the middle of the Steppe. He rode horseback and used a
bow and arrow just like Genghis Khan! Today, he's in a pre-med
program." [
