As we were driven by our daughter Solange to her home in Cold Spring in the Hudson Valley we saw for a good stretch the skyscrapers of Manhattan, especially the Empire State Building and the two tall towers of the World Trade Center, all lit up in the night. I was thinking: how can a country and a city be so arrogant and advertise their superiority, their imperial character, their being the center of world trade, with sky-scraping, insulting buildings like the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center? That arrogance is bound to provoke a reaction. Barbara and my daughter were surprised at my unusual silence during the entire car trip. It was one of my extra-sensory perceptions that something terrible was going to happen, but I did not know what. I only knew that it would not harm us, that we were not in danger. The following morning when we woke up we learned of the terror attack against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. And when I told my story to Barbara's son, he commented that another building in Manhattan was to be destroyed, namely the Empire State Building.
