Idea 4262 ~
I have observed during my lifetime that it is
difficult to hold together any human group for long if
there is not a vision, an ideal, an objective, a
dream.
To bind the human family together, to foster its further ascent, to prevent it from losing ground and falling into despair we must have a vision, a dream for the whole human family. We will not be able to swim forever in the current sea of complexities if we are not shown a shore. Yes, let us create a United Humanity, a World Union, the United States of the World or the United Nature envisioned in my wife Barbara's book under that title.

Idea 4261 ~
As we enter the third millennium we must remember the
two momentous questions put to us during the preceding
two decades: - How are we going to deal with our
environment? How will we manage it, survive and grow,
develop in it without destroying certain vital
conditions inherited from billions of years of
evolution?
How will we manage to live peacefully and cooperatively among races, nations, cultures and so many other human groups and interests? In particular, will we be able to refrain from using the minute ready, life-annihilating nuclear arms developed by certain nations? Robert's The Miracle, Joy and Art of Living, Volume III - The Seasons of Life Chapter 7 - Return to Mother Earth I often feel that our four qualities go in pairs: body and mind are close relatives, and so are heart and soul. The mind seems to be more at the service of the body while the heart seems to be mostly nurturing the soul.

On the way to the first meeting of the World
Commission on Global Consciousness and Spirituality I
was reminded of this during my life:
From the moment I became interested in the spiritual dimension of life everything began to change. I read Dag Hammarskjöld's Markings. I discovered that in the United Nations he had found God as the Master and that he had to interpret His will as the Secretary General of the UN. I would have never thought that I would rediscover spirituality in the United Nations. Perhaps spirituality is such a fundamental human need that it always reappears in one form or another in life and history and that we might be on the eve of a World Spiritual Renaissance. Robert's The Miracle, Joy and Art of Living, Volume I - The Great Scene of Creation Chapter 5 - The Miracle of Individual Life
Seen in the context
of the four infinites, human life becomes a tremendous
privilege, a gift, a miracle of the highest order in the
universe. The Hindus are probably right when they say
that we must be good people in order not to fall back
into darkness or into lower life forms endowed with
dimmer perceptions. This truth is dawning ever more
clearly upon us. It should receive a modern, scientific
formulation and be part of education.

The United
States of America is taken
for granted today while a
United States of the World
is considered unthinkable,
impossible. Well, let us
be reminded that in 1787,
when the representatives
from the Colonies argued
whether or not to write a
common Constitution the
following situation
prevailed: troops under
General Washington refused
to pledge loyalty to the
United States because they
said, "Virginia is our
country." Maryland and
Virginia argued over
oyster and crab harvesting
rights in the Potomac
River.
Nine states had their own navy. New York protected its fuel interests by putting a tariff on wood from Connecticut and its farmers by levying a tariff on New Jersey butter. Settlers from Connecticut were attacked by Pennsylvania's army for crossing its borders. Virginians objected to paying taxes to the union of states because, "that smells like parliament." Merchants in Philadelphia would not accept New Jersey's money. Robert's The Miracle, Joy and Art of Living, Volume I - The Great Scene of Creation Chapter 5 - The Miracle of Individual Life I often feel that my life is a lamp: a temporary container filled with light, a flow of energy, condensed and held together for a while in a mysterious, marvelous living cosmos linked with the rest of the Earth and the heavens through material, touchable, and immaterial, invisible ties. Someday the lamp will extinguish. The material elements will be reabsorbed and reborn by Mother Earth in her flows of life and energy. The immaterial elements will return to a universal pool to be reborn in other forms on this planet or elsewhere in the universe. My light will shine brightest, longest and happily if I take good care both of my material and immaterial forms, i.e. my body, my mind, my heart and my soul.

The following words written by astronaut Russell
Schweickart looking down to planet Earth can be
significant for the future of humanity.
"You go around it in an hour and a half. You begin to recognize that your identity is with that whole Earth and that makes a change. You look down there and you can't imagine how many borders and boundaries you cross again and again and again and you do not even see them.... Hundreds of people killing each other over some imaginary line that you are not even aware of, that you cannot see. And from where you see it the Earth is a whole and is so beautiful. You look down and you see the surface of that globe on which you have lived all this time and you know all those people down there are like you, they are you... From where you see it the Earth is a whole and is so beautiful." (see also pages 28, 29): Robert's The Miracle, Joy and Art of Living, Volume I - The Great Scene of Creation Chapter 5 - The Miracle of Individual Life We still seem to be at the point when the serpent said to Eve: "God knows that from the day you eat from that tree, your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be gods, knowing good and evil." After Adam and Eve ate from the tree, their eyes opened and they knew that they were naked. They hid and when God found them, He asked them this momentous question: "Who told you that you were naked?" From that consciousness on we were challenged to organize our own paradise, to manage the Earth and to try to become like God. We are still trying. No other animal or life form knows that it is naked.
