I like the idea of Ross Smyth, a
senator of over 60,000 honorary
life members of the Jaycee's
International that the UN should
open a campaign against the
legality of war as a way to settle
disputes. He proposes that the
1928 Kellogg-Briand Treaty be
re-examined by the United Nations.
Articles one and two of it are as
follows:
Article 1 - The High Contracting Parties solemnly declare in the names of their respective peoples that they condemn recourse to war for the solution of international controversies, and renounce it as an instrument of national policy in their relations with one another. Article 2 - The High Contracting Parties agree that the settlement or solution of all disputes or conflicts of whatever nature or of whatever origin they may be, which may arise among them, shall never be sought except by pacific means. Ross Smyth is entirely right when he says that: "This 1928 treaty did not provide effective law nor compulsory procedures for arbitration, nor a definition of war. Seventy-three years later a new attempt to make warfare effectively illegal is both justified and overdue in the nuclear age. We owe it to our children and grandchildren." interview Frank Kelly, the former
speech writer of President Truman
recommended that the UN should
create the position of High
Commissioner for Hope and a Center
for Humanity's Future. He is
absolutely right. I would add to the
latter the Earth, i.e. a Center for
the Future of Humanity and of the
Earth.
