Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500
~ Idea 1274 ~    5 January 1998

We receive yearly about 7000 Elderhostels at the University for Peace.
It would be good if the visitors would formulate their ideas for a more peaceful, better world and submit them to the University for Peace, to the Secretary General of the UN, and to the President of the United States.
I make that appeal to them.

Robert's The Miracle, Joy and Art of Living,
Volume II Chapter 15 - Of Beauty and Art
Near our former home in the Hudson Valley there is a College located on the most beautiful natural grounds, but disfigured by most depressing sculptures of modern art.

On the beautiful tropical grounds of the University for Peace, in Costa Rica, there are beautiful, inspiring sculptures, including busts of the greatest peacemakers of human history to serve as models for the students.

Which of these two makes the best use of art?

Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500
~ Idea 1268 ~    30 December 1997

There exists a Non-governmental Organization born in Italy which recommends the creation of an International Court of the Environment.

How right they are: the majority of business firms and governments will not fulfill the recommendations of the United Nations concerning the environment, not fulfill their obligations under treaties they have adopted.

Only law will force them to do it.

The same way as we had an International Court of Justice against the criminals of World War II and will now have another one for the crimes committed in Yugoslavia we need International Courts of Justice for Human Rights and for the Environment.

The International Court of the Environment Foundation is presided by Amedeo Postigliopne, Judge at the Supreme Court of Italy.  Address: Corte Suprema di Cassazione, Piazza Cavour 1, Rome, Italy.

I once asked a Professor of architecture of the Rome Studies Program to give me ideas for an architecture or art program at the University for Peace, I received this answer:
"The symbolic poverty of modern architecture renders it incapable of erecting monuments to genius and peace.  Le Corbusier's Chapelle de Ronchamps is an anomaly in the work of this prophet of the machine and utilitarianism.  He had to borrow the form of a nun's headgear to reach a certain level of beauty."

Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500
~ Idea 1266 ~    28 December 1997

Recently an author called Barbara to say that her husband wanted to tell everyone on the planet one thing each person could do before the year 2000 to make this world a better place and as hard as he thought he could not think of one.

Barbara suggested that if each person would plant a tree we would have 5.9 billion more trees on the planet and if they planted a fruit tree, countries like India would have more food.  I agree with this idea and suggest that each person, adults and children alike, plant a tree before the year 2000.

Once, in Caracas, Venezuela, where a UN conference was being held, I wanted to visit the Palacio dellas Bellas Artes.  When I got there I saw in front of it the aluminum sculpture of a woman who had her breasts cut up, her belly open, her body completely distorted.  I was horrified and thinking:
"What do the peasants from remote areas, the indigenous people from Orinoco think when they are offered such monstrosity as a symbol of beautiful art?"  I hope that it has been removed since then.  If not, it should.

Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500
~ Idea 1265 ~    27 December 1997

There is a good degree of overpricing of products, of untruths in advertisement, of unethical and health impairing ingredients in food sold on this planet, that in addition to the creation of a World Consumers Agency, I recommend also the creation of a World Court for Consumers protection.  Advertisement of cigarettes and tobacco products is one of the first items to be brought before it.  Alcohol should be next.

A Chilean delegate who was a friend of Picasso once asked him: "Why did you give up your blue period, when you painted so well, for the art you do now?"
He answered: "Because my blue, classical paintings did not sell.  The junk I do now sells."

Perhaps modern art was invented by art dealers who could not find enough good paintings and sculptures by great artists.

Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500

~ Idea 1261 ~    23 December 1997

One of the aims of the celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights next year, should be to obtain the creation of a World Court of Human Rights even if it takes decades to win against the stubborn opposition of the antiquated sovereignty of nations, cause of most of the chaos of our time
.

I once attended a meeting of the United Nations Development Program in Milano, Italy.  The meeting took place on a site where there had just been an exhibit of modern art.  Curious as always, I explored the place and found huge quantities of paintings abandoned in empty rooms and in courtyards.  I asked the manager of the place what this meant.  He answered: "O, these are paintings abandoned by the artists.  They did not bother to take them along.  They know that they are worthless."

Robert Muller - Tribute

It cannot be too late to pay tribute to this great man.

I knew of him when I worked for the UN/FAO in Rome.  He made the most of his position to speak of the deeper spiritual side of the UN, reminding us it is not merely an administrative body, overcoming with difficulty political constraints.

We need Ideas, we need Vision, and he was a great example, a channel for these.

Fate decided I was at La Casa de Maria the week before the Celebration of his life but unable to be with you on 27th September.

This place, welcoming all faiths professing peace and spirituality has a wonderful atmosphere and for that preceding week was home to members of the Order of the Cross, which proclaims a message of peace and happiness, health and purity, spirituality amd Divine Love - a dimension to life that Robert would have appreciated.

Thank you for your continuing messages which I now receive in the U.K. His work lives on!

Love and Blessings, Agnes

Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500
~ Idea 1259 ~    21 December 1997

It is with alternative meals obtained by special request on airplanes as it is with alternative schools like the Montessori schools, the Rudolf Steiner schools and the Robert Muller schools: they should be the normal meals, while the overrich, fatty, meaty and saucy meals should be alternative meals served only on special request.

When I speak in capitals or big cities, I am often asked if I would like to visit museums, including museums of modern art.

My answer is:
"I will visit a museum of modern art if at the exit there is a book in which I can write my opinion and feelings about what I saw.  If there is no such possibility I will not go.  It is my democratic right to disapprove with what has been decreed as valuable by money-makers, rich collectors and art dealers."
As a result I have not visited a museum of modern art in years.

[GMW #2086] Organize Human Life For Nature And Earth As Cherished Paradise, A Temple Of God

Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500
~ Idea 1258 ~    20 December 1997

Our whole Earth and nature are a Temple of God.  No human-made temple will ever be able to match or replace it.  It is high time to organize human life on this Earth in a manner that nature and Earth are again the paradise, the cherished, inimitable well-preserved Temple of God.

Robert's The Miracle, Joy and Art of Living,
Volume II Chapter 15 - Of Beauty and Art
Pope John Paul II, during his historic visit to the United Nations in 1979 considered UN officials to be the carvers of the stones, the builders of the Cathedral Earth.

This is what he said:
"The builders of the pyramids in Egypt and Mexico, of the temples in Asia, of the cathedrals in Europe were not only the architects who laid out the designs, or those who provided financing, but also, and in no small way, the carvers of the stones, many of whom never had the satisfaction of contemplating in its entirety the beauty of the masterpiece their hands helped create.  And yet, they were producing a work of art that would be the object of admiration for generations to come.
You are in so many ways the carvers of the stones.  Even a lifetime of dedicated service will not always enable you to see the finished monument of universal peace, of fraternal collaboration and of true harmony between peoples.  Sometimes you will catch a glimpse of it, in a particularly successful achievement, in a problem solved, in the smile of a happy and healthy child, in a conflict avoided, in a reconciliation of minds and hearts achieved.  More often, you will experience only the monotony of your daily labors, or the frustrations of bureaucratic entanglements.  But know that your work is great and that history will judge your achievements with favor.
The challenges that the world community will face in the coming years and decades will not diminish.  The rapidly changing pace of world events, the tremendous steps forward of science and technology will increase both the potential for development and the complexity of the problems.  Be prepared, be capable, but above all have confidence in the ideal you serve.

[GMW #2085] Create World Or UN Organization For The Handicapped And World Reporting System On Philanthropy For The Handicapped

Idea Dream - Robert Muller's Ideas 1 to 500
~ Idea 1253 ~    15 December 1997

I have noted that since the first International Year of the Handicapped in human history which  I got the United Nations to proclaim, the number of handicapped in the world has increased from 300 million to 500 million.

I therefore urge the creation of a World or UN Organization for the Handicapped.  The sooner, the better.

Pending this I recommend that a private organization or the United Nations establish a world reporting system on philanthropy for the handicapped and promote the creation of more prizes honoring persons and institutions which have done an outstanding work or given substantial aid for the handicapped.

Robert's The Miracle, Joy and Art of Living,
Volume II Chapter 15 - Of Beauty and Art
When Mr. Javier Perez de Cuellar was elected UN Secretary General he called me to his provisional office in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and honored me with his first appointment as Assistant Secretary General.  We talked about his role and responsibilities.

At one point he pointed at a pick-up which was playing softly classical music in the background and said to me:
"To tell you the truth, I am not a political man.  What I really love is art, especially music, like the classical music you hear."
I jumped and said to him:
"But this is exactly what you are supposed to do:  like a musician and a composer you must create a symphony of nations, a harmony between all peoples on Earth, a harmony between humanity and our beautiful Earth, a harmony with heaven.  Never forget that as Secretary General you will be a conductor, a chief of orchestra and that you must produce, interpret the most universal precious harmony of all:  Peace."
He looked at me and said,
"You are right, but you are a great man and I am not.  You should be the Secretary General.  Your obstacle is your French nationality."
