Like these accidents in a child's attempt to walk, we meet with sufferings in various forms in our life every day, showing the imperfections in our knowledge and our available power, and in the application of our will.  But if these only revealed our weakness to us, we would die of utter depression.  When we select for observation a limited area of our activities, our individual failures and miseries loom large in our minds; but our life leads us instinctively to take a wider view.  It gives us an ideal of perfection which ever carries us beyond our present limitations.  Within us we have a hope which always walks in front of our present narrow experience; it is the undying faith in the infinite in us; it will never accept our disabilities as a permanent fact; it sets no limit to its own scope; it dares to assert that man has oneness with God; and its wild dreams become true everyday. I had asked Costa Rican sisters if they would be ready to do it, and they said that they would do it enthusiastically. But my appeals to the Pope have remained unanswered.  This is why I repeat them here. May God and Catholic sisters give me a hand! I suggest that a World Commission of Elders of the indigenous peoples of America be created to advise the world how they would govern and treat the Earth.* *A conference of Indigenous People on How to Save the Earth will be held in Virginia Beach in October 1998. I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Muller on several occasions for The Tico Times between 2001 and 2003. He was an eternally optimistic man, and a great believer in dialogue, peace and internationalism. His hopefulness and idealism were compelling. On the occasions we met and talked, he despite being 50-plus years older than me acted more like the young idealist, and I the old cynic. But I always came away from our meetings feeling slightly more positive about the world's prospects. I will remember Dr. Muller best for his unwavering faith in the United Nations, which I found convincing. I think Dr. Muller believed in the importance of the United Nations more than the ambassadors and current heads of state who walk its halls today and that's a shame. Dr. Muller was a dreamer with big ideas for a better world. And I hope his spirit lives on at the University for Peace, which he co-founded. If anyone is interested in learning more about Dr. Muller's remarkable life, I recommend reading his biography Prophet, the Hatmaker's Son: The Life of Robert Muller by Douglas Gillies.  It truly reads like an action/adventure novel and tells a fascinating back story to an exceptional life.
