New Nobel Prizes should be established for the preservation of the environment, for restraint on population growth and for more simple and frugal lives.

Dearest Readers,

While Robert Muller, my husband, was reading the Sunday newspaper, he noted how many articles were discussing China and the Olympics.

Robert mentioned that he was glad that in 1971 when he was the United Nations Director of the Executive Office for Secretary General U Thant, his efforts paved the way for China to become a permanent member the United Nations. On the 25th anniversary of the United Nations at the Waldorf Astoria, in a speech Robert wrote for Secretary General U Thant, U Thant read,

" The government of an ancient and populous nation may soon be taking its place at the United Nations.....I deeply believe this event will signify a fundamental turn for the better in world affairs."

On Monday October 25, 1971, Resolution 2758 passed by an overwhelming margin of 76 to 35, with 17 abstentions.

The following morning, The New York Times, with six different stories on China on the front page reported China burst into the UN. In 1972 Robert met Chinese Premier Chou En -Lai in the Imperial Palace in Peking.

Each UN World conference on overpopulation in the poor countries should be accompanied by a world conference on overconsumption and waste in the rich countries.

While the poor countries should listen to the UN and adopt policies reducing the excessive growth of their populations, the rich countries where people use thirty times more resources than the people in the poor countries must adopt more simple and frugal lives, avoiding by all means wasteful, harmful and unnecessary consumption.

Our life styles must radically change if this Earth and humanity are to survive.

Public service is overweighted in favor of production and business. Greater attention must be given to the consumption side of humanity: insufficient consumption of many people, overconsumption and staggering waste by others, harmful consumptions unduly taxing the Earth's resources and public health.

A UN World Agency on consumption must be created with corresponding Ministries of Consumption in all countries. Like the International Labor Organization, the organization should have a tripartite representation: producers, consumers and governments.

Being a microcosm of the universe, of eternity, of our globe and of humanity, each individual has the capacity to encompass the universe, eternity, our globe and humanity.

The United Nations should reconstitute its early Fiscal Committee to study systematically and report on the world's public expenditures, national budgets and taxation, and give the world a clear, yearly picture of its priorities, allocations of resources, duplications, wastes and tax burdens on the various classes of society in all countries.

The world will be shocked when it will see the total of all national budgets and the incredible, unnecessary duplications existing between 185 governments.

To be a human means first and foremost to be a member of the human family. Instead of that, national education makes us narrow, national, planetarily irrelevant, often hostile and aggressive national beings.
