He also gave me his reason for never going to church on Sunday. He said that after leaving the trenches and walking back several miles, instead of throwing themselves on haystacks to sleep, they had to go to a church where a German priest told them that their duty was to kill many Frenchmen! This reminds me that a number of US women from California went to Vietnam, put civilian clothes on their sons and took them home.
